Highway 1

Highway 1 spans from the northern to the southern regions of the State of California, primarily hugging the picturesque coastline. A well-known segment of this legendary highway in southern California is often referred to as the Pacific Coast Highway or simply PCH. However, it’s important to note that PCH is sometimes inaccurately used as a synonym for the entire Highway 1.

The official route of Highway 1 stretches from Garberville, located 199 mi (320 km) north of San Francisco, all the way down the coast to the city of Dana Point in Orange County, which is situated 62 mi (100 km) south of Los Angeles. Whether you embark on this journey along the 655 mi (1,055 km) California State Route from San Francisco to Los Angeles or vice versa, the breathtaking views will remain equally spectacular.

It’s common for travelers to start their road trip from either Los Angeles or San Francisco and not necessarily traverse the entire distance to Garberville or Dana Point. As a result, I’ll introduce you to the highlights of this segment of Highway 1, which offers an unforgettable experience.

Arrival to the West Coast

From LA to Morro Bay

My time in Los Angeles flew by so quickly that I wouldn’t have minded staying for a few more days. However, the anticipation of embarking on a spectacular trip to San Francisco, where I would uncover breathtaking highlights along the California coast, made saying goodbye to the City of Angels a bit easier. My first stop wouldn’t be too far from the city – Santa Barbara, a city that is sure to enchant you as well.

Fall In Love With Santa Barbara

After exploring Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood thoroughly and enjoying the coastal ambiance of Malibu, you’ve reached the capital of the American Riviera, Santa Barbara, which is approximately 2.5 hours away via California State Route 1. This charming city is a true delight, offering palm-lined coasts, picturesque white villas adorned with vibrant flowers, and breathtaking coastal cliffs.

While in Santa Barbara, take a leisurely stroll through the modern shopping districts filled with high-end designer boutiques. Treat yourself to a delightful afternoon coffee amidst the city’s bustling atmosphere. Don’t forget to unwind on the beach, where you can watch sailboats and stand-up paddlers, all while sipping on a glass of locally-produced wine. Santa Barbara truly epitomizes the beauty of life, and it’s a destination that energizes you for new adventures along Highway 1.

Danish Flair in Solvang

The next stop is Solvang, a charming town with approximately 5,000 residents, founded in 1911 by Danish emigrants. As soon as you turn onto the main road, you’ll be transported to a Danish village within moments.

The town boasts small, picturesque half-timbered houses, numerous Danish shops, inviting cafés, and even a windmill that embellishes the cityscape. Immerse yourself in the Danish architecture and indulge in the local cuisine and wines from the surrounding region.

If you happen to find yourself in Solvang during the morning or around noon, I highly recommend a visit to the renowned Paula’s Pancake House. This cozy establishment serves a delectable array of pancake variations that might surpass even your wildest breakfast or lunch expectations.

Sunsets in Morro Bay

After covering another 87 mi (140 km) along Highway 1, with a brief stop at Pismo Beach, you’ll arrive in Morro Bay, marking the halfway point of your journey. Morro Bay is a picturesque coastal town renowned for its namesake, the magnificent Morro Rock, which sits prominently in the bay.

For a perfect breakfast experience, I recommend Shine Café, known for its exceptional smoothies and excellent breakfast options.

“Marvel at the spectacular sunset at Morro Rock.”

Throughout the day, there’s plenty to explore in Morro Bay. You can explore lush parks and gardens, unwind on the beach, or engage in activities like kayaking, golfing, or hiking on the nearby trails. By late afternoon, be sure to head to Morro Rock to witness the breathtaking sunset. It’s pure idyllic bliss—a vibrant yellow-red sky against the backdrop of crashing waves, creating a truly magical scene.

Given the natural beauty and attractions in Morro Bay, it’s a great place to spend the night in one of the local hotels, as many stunning natural highlights demand the time to be fully appreciated.

Big Sur Nature’s Paradise

The journey along Highway 1 continues, and the next highlight on this route is truly breathtaking. As you head further north, the landscape and scenery become increasingly awe-inspiring. Big Sur, a nature paradise, lies before you, ready to be explored.

The cliffs in this region grow even more precipitous, and the road winds along the coastline in ever more impressive and narrow curves, leaving you in a state of constant amazement.

Elephant Seals and Charming Bays

Elephant Seal Vista Point is a mere 40-minute drive from Morro Bay. At this spot, you can witness numerous massive elephant seals sunbathing on the beach, occasionally using their sausage-like flippers to toss sand onto their backs or making their way to the water. Take your time on the shore to observe these remarkable creatures as they enjoy the sun.

Shortly thereafter, you’ll encounter the official sign marking the beginning of Big Sur. Feel free to stop wherever the natural beauty beckons you to pause. There are numerous viewpoints along the way, offering priceless vistas of the coastline, rugged cliffs, vibrant blue ocean, and lush green landscapes—truly a place to fall in love with.

One particularly enchanting sight in Big Sur is McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. This hidden gem showcases unspoiled nature, with a delicate waterfall gracefully cascading from the cliffs into a cove surrounded by lush greenery, including a majestic palm tree that adds to the picture-perfect backdrop.

Breaking Waves on Pfeiffer Beach

If you’re feeling hungry, I have a special restaurant recommendation for you: Nepenthe Restaurant, situated directly on Highway 1, known as Cabrillo Highway along this stretch of the coast. It’s worth noting that this restaurant can get quite busy, so it’s advisable to make a reservation in advance.

Their menu offers delightful and fresh options such as salads, sandwiches, homemade potato wedges with a dip, and chicken with fries to satisfy your appetite for the journey ahead. However, the real highlight here is the breathtaking view. Positioned right on the coast, Nepenthe provides a fantastic dining experience on its terrace with an unparalleled view of the Pacific Ocean.

“A deserted beach with breaking waves and rock faces: Pfeiffer Beach.”

The next destination may be a bit tricky to locate since it’s accessible via a small path off a less-developed side road, but it’s well worth the effort.

Pfeiffer Beach is a hidden gem of a bay that mainly attracts daring surfers willing to take on its rough waves. Apart from them, this beach, nestled among towering cliffs, remains nearly deserted. Spending romantic hours here while gazing at the stormy sea and crashing waves is an unforgettable encounter with nature.

The Classic Bixby Creek Bridge

Point Sur State Historic Park is a must-visit destination, located just a few miles further along Highway 1. Here, you have the opportunity to explore the Point Sur Lighthouse and enjoy breathtaking views from 328 ft (100 m) above the sea.

As you continue on your journey, you’ll also encounter the renowned Bixby Creek Bridge, a famous landmark that warrants a stop for a memorable photograph—it’s an absolute must!

Californian Lifestyle in the Coastal Towns

Slowly you drive past houses again, and you leave Big Sur at this point and get back into the livelier sections of Highway 1.

Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea

Both the picturesque town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its charming cottages, pristine white-sand beaches, and a plethora of exciting events, and Monterey, situated along the captivating Monterey Bay, are ideal destinations for a hotel stay and a brief respite.

TIP: Here’s another hearty recommendation – be sure to pay a visit to the cozy café, Loulou’s Griddle In The Middle, located on Monterey Pier, for breakfast. Indulge in their generous and delectable pancakes, hearty omelets, or fresh wraps while enjoying a delightful atmosphere.

I suggest beginning your day without a rigid itinerary. Allow yourself to be swept away by the relaxed Californian way of life and the refreshing coastal breeze. The sense of comfort is contagious, and you’ll immerse yourself in a bit of local culture. Enjoy delicious breakfast treats and savor fresh seafood for dinner – it doesn’t get much better than this!

Sea Lions in Santa Cruz

The final stop on Highway 1 before reaching San Francisco is Santa Cruz. This coastal city is well worth dedicating a full day to explore. Start your visit with a leisurely stroll along the coastline to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, where you can indulge in thrilling rides on roller coasters and experience the excitement of the Free Fall ride.

Don’t forget to observe the lively sea lions that often gather beneath the pier, and relish the fresh sea breeze on the beach.

“Soak up the atmosphere from nature and the sea view.”

Occasionally, you may be fortunate enough to catch free concerts taking place in the area, which provide a delightful musical interlude. Another fantastic option is to embark on whale-watching excursions or day trips to explore the surrounding natural beauty, including Big Basin Redwoods State Park.

Here, you can immerse yourself in the serene atmosphere while admiring the towering redwoods and taking in breathtaking ocean views. This interlude in nature sets the perfect tone as you prepare to continue your journey towards the vibrant city of San Francisco.

Final Destination: San Francisco

As you approach the final stretch of your journey on Highway 1, you’ll begin to spot the city skyline on the horizon from a distance. If the bustling atmosphere of Los Angeles was a bit overwhelming for you, then you’ll find San Francisco to be a welcome change.

This city has a distinct European charm, a laid-back vibe, and an ambiance that captivates everyone who visits. There’s plenty to explore here, but for more detailed recommendations, you can refer to my San Francisco travel guide.

I must say that Highway 1 is an incredibly picturesque route that I have had the pleasure of driving along in a car. I highly recommend that everyone consider planning a California road trip rather than opting for air travel. If you have the luxury of time, I suggest that you plan for a longer trip and make stops at various accommodations along the way. There are many thrilling activities to experience and plenty to see on this route, making it a worthwhile journey.
