Did you know that MIL-Q-9858 was about 4/5ths compliant with ISO 9001 – but that was in 1994? Today, the MIL-Q-9858 quality program is only about 2/5ths compliant with the latest ISO 9001 standard.
The MIL-Q kit is an excellent selection but we perceive that you will do all the work necessary to implement MIL-Q-9858 then be approached by one or more of your existing or future Customers to urge you to comply with ISO 9001. All the work to comply with MIL-Q won’t be wasted but you will have to go through another paradigm-shift or culture shock to implement the ISO standard. Our experience is that Employees don’t like to live in a flavor-of-the-month culture or get bounced around from one standard to another. Its enough work to make the transition one time, much less another…
All the work you’ll do to comply with MIL-Q could be applied to compliance with ISO 9001 then you’ll be setup for only minor changes with present or future Customers. In the ISO world, these minor changes are actually known as Continuous Improvement Opportunities and don’t amount to much additional effort since they improve the business operation.
Consider all the work you’re about to do for compliance to MIL-Q-9858, which still has name-brand value but is from the “old-traditional” era of business, while ISO 9001 is from the “new-modern” era of business.
